Reducing Fatigue and Easing Depression Naturally With Vitamin B12 And CoQ10

Reducing Fatigue and Easing Depression Naturally With Vitamin B12 And CoQ10

It’s estimated that about 8% of the population experienced depressive symptoms regularly prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the outbreak and subsequent national lockdown, the number of people with symptoms of depression has tripled. Almost 28% of the population is now reporting at least one symptom of depression.

Battling depression is difficult, but when you add in fatigue, the effects of both ailments are heightened.

Depression and fatigue go hand in hand because fatigue is a residual symptom of depression. Alleviating both problems can give patients results faster than simply treating one at a time.

Why Treat Depression And Fatigue Naturally With Vitamin B12 and CoQ10?

For many pharmaceuticals are not an option. Some patients have reported having adverse side effects from prescriptions commonly used to treat depression.

Harvard Medical School’s health publishing site has indicated that the most common prescriptions for treating depression are selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

These forms of antidepressants have been around since the 1980s and include drugs like Prozac and Zoloft.

While many patients are able to tolerate SSRIs without negative side effects, some patients find that the side effects are worse than the depression that they’re prescribed to treat.

Some of the side effects that have been associated with SSRIs include:

  • Insomnia
  • Skin rashes
  • Headaches
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Upset stomach
  • Nausea or diarrhea
  • Diminished sex drive

In addition to these undesirable side effects, there are other potential concerns about SSRIs. Some drugs have poor interactions with SSRIs. Certain anti-inflammatory medications don’t mix well with many anti-depressants.

For those fighting inflammatory conditions and depression, a compound like CoQ10 and vitamin B12 is a potential all-natural alternative to prescription medications.

Another factor to consider is that over time patients can develop a tolerance for the drugs meaning that they lose their effectiveness to treat depression.

Some patients report having symptoms once they stop taking SSRIs as well.

For those who are considering getting off of SSRIs, discontinuation symptoms include:

  • Dizziness
  • Loss of coordination
  • Fatigue
  • Tingling
  • Blurred vision
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety

In some extreme cases, violent behavior and suicidal thoughts have been reported for some individuals who don’t respond well to SSRIs.

Vitamin B12 And CoQ10 - Treating Depression And Fatigue Together Naturally

Having low levels of vitamin B12 has been linked to depression.

Anyone is susceptible to becoming deficient in vitamin B12. Two of the top reasons that people find themselves with a B12 deficiency are actually due to lifestyles that are meant to improve health.

Vegetarians and people who have undergone weight loss surgery are at particularly high risk of being B12 deficient.

Poor diet and a malfunction in the way your body absorbs nutrients are also causes of low levels of B12. People over the age of 50 are also more likely to be deficient.

Studies have shown that vitamin B12 works well in conjunction with SSRIs as well as on its own to treat major depression. (1)

Vitamin B12 helps to keep nerve and blood cells healthy. This contributes to a healthy nervous system and brain activity.

Researchers believe that you have to have certain levels of chemicals in the brain. When levels are off, the brain is not able to function properly, sometimes resulting in depression or other mood disorders. (2)

Maintaining healthy levels of vitamin B12 has been shown to be imperative to mental health. One study found that in elderly women, low levels of vitamin B12 doubled the likelihood of severe depression. (3)

How CoQ10 Helps With Depression

Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10 is similar to vitamin B12 in that low levels of the nutrient have been closely linked to major depression.

Elderly bipolar patients were observed in a treatment study focusing on the efficacy of CoQ10 for treatment of depressive symptoms. The treatment was well tolerated and patients reported significant decreases in symptoms of depression. (4)

It’s thought that CoQ10 is helpful in the treatment of depression due to its high antioxidant properties.

Depression has been linked to chronic inflammation and increased oxidative stress with lower antioxidant levels.

The antioxidant properties of CoQ10 fight the cause of inflammation, free radicals.  Free radicals cause oxidative stress that leads to harmful inflammation.

Antioxidants are free radical scavengers and scour the body for rogue cells to destroy.

Why Combine CoQ10 And Vitamin B12?

If you’re experiencing fatigue along with depression symptoms, combining CoQ10 and vitamin B12 can provide relief from both ailments.

Both supplements are considered to be energy boosting nutrients. Improved energy and immune function for each can be attributed to high antioxidant levels.

Depression is linked to fatigue. Treating both simultaneously increases the likelihood of positive health outcomes.

Each supplement is also involved in energy production within cells. This is why patients report having more energy when they're taking a CoQ10 and vitamin B12 supplement

Vitamin B12 converts fat and protein into energy. CoQ10 stimulates mitochondria to produce more ATP energy (the energy that’s used to fuel other cellular processes).

Liposomes For Increased Absorption Of Vitamins And Supplements

Getting the most out of your supplements is highly dependent upon the form that you take them in.

IVs are used in hospital settings to deliver the most potent concentrations of drugs and vitamins to patients. The reason hospitals use IVs instead of pills or powders is that most drugs in these forms aren’t easily absorbed by the body.

Because the pill and powder forms of vitamins aren’t readily bioavailable (how much is absorbed versus how much is administered), scientists developed other delivery methods.

Liposomes have been at the forefront of hyper-localized and high-potency delivery methods for drugs in the treatment of cancer and other serious illnesses like COVID-19.

What Are Liposomes?

Liposomes are molecules that envelope drugs and vitamins in a protective sheath that preserves the medicine on its way to the small intestine for absorption into the bloodstream.

The stomach acids that break down food also break down medicine and supplements. Liposomes protect the medicine so more of it can get into the bloodstream and less is excreted as waste.

Liposomes are also very similar to the body’s own cells making them more easily absorbed.
